"Will You Listen Now???"

"I am a white woman. I come from a good family and good social class. I am privileged and lucky to have the skin colour I was born with. A lot of people have trouble acknowledging the advantages individuals receive by simply just being white. Whether in the workplace, at school or in a store, understanding that people have different experiences in each setting is just the first step in acknowledging white privilege. During the past few months the conversation of racial injustice, not only in America, but around the world has been brought into the light. Confronting the lack of education on the topic of white privilege is the main goal of the project,  accordingly this essay is primarily focused on individuals who disregard white privilege as an ideology. Equally the essay may be used as a reference when trying to educate others on how they are privileged. The video that coincides with this essay named “Will You Listen Now???” is a representation of different examples of how an individual can be privileged by having a lighter skin tone and will be spoken about more in depth throughout the essay. In planning this project I wanted to be aware of the impact my essay and video might cause. Firstly by not making art pieces in relevance to the Black Lives Matter movement in order to not dilute the black community’s art world. Secondly, to use published journals and well known educators to prove how detrimental it is to keep avoiding the existence of white privilege."

This paragraph is the introduction for my dissertation about white privilege that can be read in full below;

The video shown below is called "Will You Listen Now???". I asked all of my black, asian and mixed race friends the question "how has white privilege positively or negatively affected your life. Using my skin colour to get the message across as a point of knowing that being white I will have more people listening to me. (more about the video on my artist talk)
